From rainbow burgers to Murtaburgers, and even Hokkien Mee and French food, here are some of the most popular Halal and Muslim-owned eateries in and around Yishun.
Note: Not all the eateries here are on MUIS’ list of Halal establishments. Please check www.halal.sg for the most updated list.
1. Coba Coba
Coba Coba is definitely the place for delicious, affordable food in a comfortable setting. The most unique dish there is a Nasi Ambeng which is big enough for 3 or more people. The aromatic rice, crispy yet moist begedil, complex rendang and many other sides will leave your taste buds singing. You can also try their nasi padang, mee rebus, mee siam and nasi lemak.
Address: Blk 156 Yishun Street 11 #01-106
2. Arnold’s Chicken
This Singapore-owned fast food chain is best known for their crispy-on-the-outside yet tender-on-the-inside chicken. You’ll be spoilt for choice with a variety of sides like buns, fries, mashed potatoes and potato wedges.
Address: 51 Yishun Central 1, Yishun 10 Cineplex
3. Zi Zai Vegetarian
The boss told us that Zi Zai is Halal-certified and they don’t use any animal products at all. Despite this, Zi Zai is known for its vast array of dishes. Like their Hokkien Mee, which is not just meatless but also uses less salt and oil, yet tastes similar to the non-vegetarian version.
Address: Blk 236 Yishun Ring Rd #01-1000
4. Springleaf Prata
Last year, the internet went nuts over their Murtaburger, two juicy mutton patties in a prata crust, and their other innovative offerings, like the Eggs Benedict prata and prata goreng.
Yishun residents also love their classics, like fish head curry, biryani and butter chicken. When we have events, their catering is YUM too!
Address: 1 Thong Soon Avenue
5. Word Café
Hidden in a small alley across from Springleaf Prata, this café is known for its rainbow burger. The rainbow-hued bagel bun is the first thing to catch your eye (and Instagram feed), but don’t assume this is looks-over-substance hipster food. The juicy patty and crispy turkey bacon are amazing enough, then the spicy peanut butter (!) sauce takes it to another level altogether.
Address: 906 Upper Thomson Road
6. Bluestar Islamic Banana Leaf
Chong Pang City never sleeps. Part of the buzz is Bluestar, which is open and bustling 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The Indian Rojak here is affordable, generously portioned and comes with a nutty spicy sauce. The selection of food here means you’ll always find something to hit the spot!
Address: Blk 105 Yishun Ave 5
7. Burger Up
Another Singaporean-owned fast food chain, and it proves its local cred by offering burgers inspired by local delicacies like rendang burgers and salted egg fries. The rendang flavouring is just as complex as in any nasi padang stall, and the golden salted egg sauce coating the fries is simply irresistible! If you want a healthier alternative to fries, they’re also known for their fried mushrooms.
Address: 51 Yishun Central 1, Yishun 10 Cineplex
8. Taste Garden
This restaurant inside ORTO (the former Bottle Tree Park) is the best place to bring large groups. With French, Western and local halal food to choose from, everyone will have a good meal. The squid ink pasta has the right amount of bite, and you can taste the freshness in the simply-prepared seafood.
Address: 81 Lor Chencharu (8-minute walk from Khatib MRT
9. My Kampung @Junction Nine
This recently opened cafeteria/ food court serves a variety of foods from Yong Tau Foo to even western delights. The Yong Tau Foo tried was flavourful and fresh. Come here for a variety of halal delights!
Address: Junction Nine, 18 Yishun Ave 9
10. Delhi Chilli Mast Tadka
Also located in Junction Nine, this Indian restaurant boasts a wide variety of food. Following the chef’s recommendations, we ordered mutton masala and naans, which didn’t disappoint. We also liked that you can customise the spice level of your food. This Ramadan period, the owner is also offering free drinks to those who patronise the store.
Address: Junction Nine, 18 Yishun Ave 9
