Madam Ong Chiah is already 85 and has a weak heart. But she’s still taking care of her son, Mr Lim Sze Peng. Sze Peng suffered a heart attack and stroke ten years ago, and needs help to walk, eat and bathe.
The Lims have no source of income. Even though they get help from the Government and their local MP, they still worry about their daily and medical expenses.
Enter Mediacorp’s “Hearts & Hugs’’ fund raising programme. Mediacorp artistes Elvin Ng and Quan Yifong organised a futsal tournament in Yishun’s FutsalArena to raise money for the Lims.
A celebrity football team and ex-national players like Lim Tong Hai showed up to play for a good cause. Minister K Shanmugam also attended the event to show his support. They attracted plenty of Yishun residents to watch the matches and buy merchandise, with the proceeds going to charity.
Nee Soon grassroots leaders also chipped in. In just one day, $32,085 was raised for the Lims.
Minister Shanmugam said, “(The fundraising exercise) truly captures the selflessness and generosity of our people – from the celebrities to the individuals who came to support in any way they could.”
